What is the Made in Britain Trademark?

The Made in Britain Trademark exists to unite and support British manufacturers, as well as product buyers and end customers to confidently identify and purchase products that meet the criteria set by Made in Britain, a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to represent and promote British manufacturing.

The Trademark is registered with the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO), with eligibility rules regarding who can use the mark outlined in Section 49 of the 1994 Trade Marks Act.

Permission to legally bear the Made in Britain Trademark is granted following submission of written evidence of where a company’s products are manufactured, in order to satisfy the country of origin labelling, as set out by the 1968 Trade Descriptions Act. Once accredited, manufacturers can fully leverage the growing recognition of the logo as a symbol of products made in Britain, ensuring high standards and reliability for the end user.

Why have we applied for the Made in Britain trademark?

There are practical reasons as to why Advanced Materials has applied for this protected trademark, as Villeater Gladman, our Technical Director, explains:

“We understand the associated issues with off-shoring and how this can impact quality, costs, as well as logistics. Our Made in Britain membership will support our customers in their search for reliable and high quality silicone extrusions made here in the UK. The mark provides full transparency and reliability to our customers.”

What criteria must be met in order to become accredited?

There are two principal routes to accreditation; one for physical product manufacturers, the other for digital product manufacturers.

Physical product manufacturers, such as Advanced Materials, must be able to prove that the raw materials or components used to manufacture the end product have ‘undergone a substantial and transformative change as a result of manufacturing processes that take place in Great Britain’.

Digital products and software manufacturers need to show the development, concept, coding, quality control and maintenance of all finished digital products are carried out in Great Britain.

Both types of manufactured products must adhere to the rule that the labour or human resources involved is based solely in Great Britain.

What does the Made in Britain trademark mean for advanced materials

What does the Made in Britain trademark mean for our customers?

Beginning in the 1990s, off-shoring was introduced as a cost-cutting solution in manufacturing. However, over the decades since it became popular, product buyers, as well as consumers, have reported issues with rising labour costs, demand for shorter product runs, quality control and logistics – most recently negatively impacted by the Covid pandemic. British manufacturers are now responding to these issues, with more than half of UK based manufacturers engaging in ‘reshoring’, as well as attracting orders from overseas.

In gaining our Made in Britain Trademark status, Advanced Materials aims to leave our customers and prospective customers in no doubt when it comes to guaranteeing the quality of the manufacture of our silicone extrusions. We are a specialist manufacturer in this area, producing custom extrusions to fit a multitude of applications in various industries. We offer customers both here in the UK and overseas, a highly reliable service, removing potential logistical issues they may have faced in the past whilst purchasing from abroad, or purchasing from UK manufacturers who have offshored their manufacturing.

Growing preference for British made

The Made in Britain Trademark is an internationally recognised and protected mark. Here in the UK, nearly 80% of British companies recognise the official mark, while 57% of businesses say they prefer to buy British-made products over alternatives produced and imported from other countries. With the trend for reshoring and preference for UK-manufactured

products showing no signs of abating, those seeking high quality silicone rubber extrusions can have a high level of confidence in the capabilities of manufacturers, such as Advanced Materials, who bear the Made in Britain Trademark.
