Silicone Rubber Strip Profiles

Image shows an assortment of silicone rubber strips manufactured by Advanced Materials.

Silicone rubber strips are one of the simplest and most versatile extrusion profiles available, providing a reliable solution for sealing, spacing, insulation and protection across a wide range of industries. Their consistent rectangular cross-section makes them easy to specify, fabricate and install, while the inherent properties of silicone ensure long-term performance in demanding environments.

Advanced Materials manufactures silicone rubber strip profiles for customers across sectors including food and beverage processing, medical equipment, rail, aerospace, construction, industrial manufacturing and electrical engineering. Whether used as compression seals, packing strips, wear pads, thermal barriers or fabricated gaskets, every strip is produced to meet your exact application requirements.

We manufacture both solid and hollow strip profiles in a wide range of widths and thicknesses. Hollow strips can provide reduced compression forces where softer sealing characteristics are required, while solid strips offer excellent dimensional stability for gasket, spacer and packing applications.

Unlike off-the-shelf products, every silicone rubber strip is manufactured to order at our West Sussex facility. You can specify the dimensions, Shore A hardness, colour and silicone grade required, with options including FDA-compliant, flame-retardant, rail-approved and high-temperature materials.

Many strip profiles can also be supplied as finished components. We offer cut lengths, self-adhesive backing, punched fixing holes, joined rings and rectangular frame gaskets, and other fabricated assemblies, reducing additional processing during your own production.

With more than 30 years of silicone extrusion experience and a library of over 10,000 existing extrusion tools, we can often manufacture from an existing profile or produce a bespoke tool where a completely custom solution is needed. Every order benefits from our ISO 9001-certified manufacturing processes, full material traceability and technical support from a highly experienced UK extrusion team.

Many engineers and buyers begin by reviewing standard strip dimensions before deciding whether a bespoke profile is required.

Advanced Materials has manufactured silicone rubber strip extrusions for over 30 years and maintains an extensive library of existing tooling, including solid strips, hollow strips and square section profiles in a wide range of dimensions.

Reviewing our existing profile drawings can often identify a section that closely matches your requirements, helping to reduce tooling costs and shorten lead times.

Where an existing tool is not suitable, our in-house tooling team can design and manufacture a new extrusion die to your exact specification.

Whether you require a simple packing strip, a precision gasket material or a fabricated sealing component, we can manufacture strips to meet your dimensional, material and performance requirements.

If you already have a drawing, CAD model or sample, simply send it to our technical team and we will review the design and advise on the most appropriate manufacturing solution.

Typical Silicone Rubber Strips Applications

Silicone rubber strips are one of the most adaptable extrusion formats and are used across a wide variety of industrial applications.

Typical uses include:

Compression gaskets

Solid strips are frequently used to create simple compression seals between flat mating surfaces on machinery, enclosures and equipment.

Packing and spacer strips

Uniform thickness makes strip profiles ideal for packing applications where accurate spacing or levelling is required during assembly.

Thermal insulation

Silicone’s excellent temperature resistance allows strips to provide thermal separation between components exposed to heat or cold.

Electrical insulation

The electrical insulating properties of silicone make strip profiles suitable for protecting electrical equipment, switchgear and enclosures.

Wear and protection strips

Silicone strips help protect painted, coated or delicate surfaces from abrasion, vibration and impact during operation or transportation.

Fabricated seals and components

Extruded strips can be cut, bonded or joined into bespoke gaskets, frame seals and other fabricated components to suit individual equipment designs.

Custom Silicone Rubber Strips Made to Your Specification

Our in-house toolmakers can manufacture bespoke strip profiles to suit almost any application.

Although strips appear straightforward, selecting the correct dimensions, material grade and hardness is essential to achieving the required sealing performance, durability and ease of installation.

You can specify:

  • Width
  • Thickness
  • Solid, hollow or square section
  • Shore A hardness
  • Colour
  • Silicone compound to suit your application
  • Self-adhesive backing where required
  • Cut lengths or fabricated components

Many strip profiles are further converted into finished parts through cutting, punching, adhesive application, joining or fabrication, allowing customers to receive components that are ready for assembly.

With over 10,000 existing extrusion tools alongside our bespoke tooling capability, we can often recommend the most cost-effective manufacturing route for your project.

Material Grades and Performance Options

Silicone rubber strips can be manufactured in a wide range of material grades to match both environmental conditions and regulatory requirements.

Available options include:

  • General purpose silicone
  • FDA-compliant grades for food and beverage equipment
  • Flame-retardant silicone meeting UL94 V-0
  • Drinking water approved compounds
  • High temperature silicone grades
  • Rail-compliant materials meeting EN 45545
  • Translucent and coloured silicone compounds

Material selection depends on factors such as operating temperature, chemical exposure, compression requirements and any industry-specific approvals.

Our technical team can advise on the most suitable compound to ensure long-term sealing performance and product reliability.

Silicone strips are commonly selected because they offer:

  • Excellent temperature resistance
  • Long service life
  • Good recovery after compression
  • Resistance to weathering, UV and ozone
  • Low maintenance performance in demanding environments

Compression Recommendations for Silicone Rubber P Section Seals

Achieving the correct amount of compression is one of the most important factors in ensuring a reliable seal. In most static sealing applications, silicone rubber P section profiles typically perform best when the sealing bulb is compressed by approximately 20–30% of its original height, although the optimum compression will depend on the material grade, Shore hardness and operating conditions.

Insufficient compression may result in an ineffective seal, allowing the ingress of water, dust or air. Conversely, excessive compression can increase closing forces, accelerate compression set over time and reduce the service life of the seal.

For the best sealing performance, we recommend:

  • Designing the enclosure or door to achieve approximately 20–30% bulb compression
  • Selecting the appropriate Shore A hardness for the required sealing force and compression recovery
  • Allowing for manufacturing tolerances and thermal expansion within the assembly
  • Avoiding over-compression, particularly where doors, hatches or access panels are opened and closed frequently

Our technical team can advise on the most appropriate bulb size, material grade and profile geometry to achieve reliable sealing performance for your specific application, helping ensure the seal performs consistently throughout its service life.

From Tooling to Production

Every silicone rubber strip follows the same controlled manufacturing process, from tooling through to final inspection.

Where a suitable existing tool is unavailable, our in-house toolmakers manufacture new extrusion dies at our Littlehampton facility, allowing projects to move quickly without relying on external suppliers.

Once tooling has been approved, production is carried out under our ISO 9001 quality management system using controlled extrusion processes and routine dimensional inspection.

We provide:

  • ISO 3302-1 Class E1 cross-sectional tolerances as standard
  • Full material traceability
  • Batch consistency checks
  • Visual inspection throughout manufacture
  • Retention of production samples
  • Laser marking where identification is required

Due to all tooling, extrusion and finishing being managed in-house within the same facility, we maintain close control over quality, lead times and repeatability throughout production.
