U channel profiles are one of the most widely used silicone extrusion shapes and are commonly used wherever an exposed edge needs protection, sealing or finishing.

Edge Protection
U channels are widely used to cover exposed edges on many materials such as metal, glass and composite panels. Used in sign making and other manufacturing industries across the world and well as being used as a reusable protective piece for transporting specialist components minimising movement or vibration.
Flexible Aesthetic Trims
In fabricated assemblies, finished goods and customer facing products; U channels are often used as flexible aesthetic trims to provide a clean, finished edge around panels, covers and housings. Silicone rubber seals can be manufactured in a very wide range of colours.
Protection for cables and components
In enclosures and other applications, U channel sections can provide a protective interface that cushions movement and protects electrical components and cables. The simplest form of u channels are designed to simply slot over and grip onto the part that is to be protected, more complicated designs also include lips or hollows.
Panel edging and finishing
Many industrial panels, access covers and machine guards use U channel profiles to provide a neat finished edge while protecting the underlying structure. U channels with shorter legs can provide a low profile edging, whilst longer legged channels can be used for framing or gripping
Custom glazing seals
U channel sections can also be designed to retain glass or transparent panels in architectural glazing systems or industrial equipment enclosures. Often designed to slot over the glass and then slot into an aluminium channel itself. Seals of this type are often designed to either be translucent to be as unnoticeable in the architecture as possible, or black for a contrasting seal.
Weatherproof and waterproof sealing
In outdoor or exposed environments, U channel profiles can help create sealing interfaces that reduce the ingress of water, dust and contaminants, and help protect the interior of the enclosure. Silicone rubber can be compressed to make a seal that protects from rain

Ensuring a Proper Fit
A common misconception is that choosing a slightly undersized channel will create a tighter seal. In practice, an undersized rubber U channel profile often causes the legs to splay open, reducing surface contact along the inner surface of the legs of the profile.
For best results:
- Select a channel that matches the panel thickness precisely, or
- Choose a section very slightly oversized (for example by 0.2mm) at the base of the channel and with legs closing in.
This ensures consistent sealing and retention along the full inner surface of the profile.
